Anker Soundcore Motion Boom Plus Review – Quality 80 watt Bluetooth box

Anker is a Chinese company that has been producing audio equipment for several years.

It is also one of my favorite consumer electronics brand companies, with a global brand matrix of six brands, including Anker, Soundcore, Eufy, Nebula, Ankerwork, and AnkerMake, covering multiple product categories such as charging, smart innovation, and wireless audio.

One of their latest products is the Soundcore Motion Boom Plus, a portable Bluetooth speaker with a rugged design and long battery life.

In this Soundcore Motion Boom Plus review, we will take a closer look at the features, sound quality, and overall performance of this speaker.

Anker Soundcore Motion Boom vs Motion Plus

Before we start the actual test, let’s compare the specifications of the two speakers, why the new generation is so much more expensive than the previous generation?

To see the differences in their previous features:

The first and most intuitive thing is that the Soundcore Motion Boom Plus gets bigger and heavier, with the same old-school look.

And there are two tweeters, which I think is the main reason for the skyrocketing price.

There have also been some additional feature upgrades. Protection levels have been extended to include dust protection, and there’s now a 3.5mm headphone connection for analog playback, all to better serve outdoor public playback.

Soundcore Motion Boom Plus Design and Build Quality

The Soundcore Motion Boom Plus has a unique design, with a cylindrical shape and a matte finish. I think the look is a great success and I especially like the old-school vibe of both generations.

Despite weighing up to 2.3 kg, the Soundcore Motion Boom Plus can be safely transported with the integrated handle. The handle is now ribbed. It feels a little better in the hand.

The speaker is also IP67 rated, meaning it is waterproof and can withstand being submerged in water for up to 30 minutes.

The overall build quality is excellent, with sturdy construction and a rubberized finish that provides a good grip.

Soundcore Motion Boom Plus Connectivity and Battery Life

The speaker connects to your device via Bluetooth 5.3, and it has a range of up to 100 feet.

Once turned on, you simply press the Bluetooth button and pair it with the box on the host device. Once paired successfully, the connection will be automatically re-established the next time you turn on the device.

It also has an AUX input for devices that don’t have Bluetooth.

The Soundcore Motion Boom Plus has a 13,400mAh battery, and the manufacturer promises up to 20 hours of music playback time.

I tested the 30% volume runtime with bedtime music. I was able to play 22 hours of music in a week, which is roughly in line with the manufacturer’s specifications. According to this, You should achieve:

  • about 18 hours of runtime at 50% volume
  • 12 to 15 hours of runtime at 80% volume
  • Charging via USB-C takes a total of 6 hours

Soundcore Motion Boom Plus Sound Quality

Soundcore Motion Boom Plus has a powerful sound. There are four titanium audio drivers responsible for the sound:

  • Two 3.5-inch woofers, each 30 watts, for deep bass;
  • There’s also a passive bass radiator and two tweeters at 10 watts each.

The total output is 80 watts, which is quite a lot for a portable speaker. The overall performance has been improved compared to its predecessor.

The tweeter has also been modified. The speaker also has a BassUp button that
can enhance the low frequencies, which is great for listening to music with lots of basses.

So how did the Anker Soundcore Motion Boom Plus perform in real-world testing?

Please note that professional sound tests will not be provided here. But what is clear is that the Anker Soundcore Motion Boom Plus is so loud that you can barely turn it on in your living room without the neighbors knocking on your door or hearing ringing in your ears.

The sound is clean and distortion-free at volumes up to about 80%. Above 80%, some accuracy is lost – not the end of the world, but at least not appealing to sober listeners who don’t like to dance.

As far as tuning is concerned, Soundcore kicks in automatically with bass boost mode on. This is a good thing because turning it off would have left too much bass in the music. With the bass boost activated, the music is bass-heavy, which is perfect for positioning as a party box.

However, it is sometimes difficult to see outdoors if the white LEDs for the power and bass boost buttons are on. This is a drawback not related to sound.

The mids and especially the highs are not completely lost compared to the previous model.

If you are looking for a more balanced mix, such as listening to music quietly, you should switch to the “balanced” EQ.

Alternatively, you can choose to set your own EQ and adjust the sound to your liking. This is definitely a huge advantage over many other Bluetooth boxes on the market.

Conclusion

Overall, the Anker Soundcore Motion Boom Plus is an excellent portable Bluetooth speaker that offers great sound quality, connectivity, and battery life.

The rugged design and waterproof rating make it a great choice for outdoor use, and the BassUp feature is a nice touch for bass-heavy music.

If you’re looking for a high-quality Bluetooth speaker, the Soundcore Motion Boom Plus is worth considering.
